Presenter - Neil Turner ( Topic - Turning a Sphere with embellishments.

Neil’s work has been shown in galleries across Australia and internationally. His fine sculptures and furniture feature in both public and private collections and he has received public art commissions. He has also been invited to demonstrate his skills at numerous schools and associations both locally and internationally.

Member Gallery: Members are encouraged to bring their woodturning creations to the monthly meeting where they will be photographed. The photos are posted on our website and often included in the Newsletter. Those who bring a turned item will receive a free wood raffle ticket.

Tool Raffle: A great way to pick up a new tool at a fraction of the cost if you're the lucky raffle winner!

Wood Raffle: There is always a good selection of quality turning wood donated by Club members.


Turn a sphere between centres

Demonstrate a range of turning techniques

  • Use of a spindle/bowl gouge to achieve the outside form.
  • Marking out the sphere with the use of vernier gauge
  • Show the jigs required to complete the turning process
  • Use of pencil lines to orientate the sphere for final turning
  • Use of templates to assist the turning process
  • Sanding

Demonstrate the use of a Micro motor Machine and the many advantages over the other options available.

  • Ease of bur change.
  • Lack of hand piece vibration.
  • Very quiet running when operating.
  • Good range of speeds
  • No flexible drive to contend with.

Run through a few carving and embellishing options for this particular form and the range of burs required to create them.

Cube of wood between 60mm and 90mm

Soft timber 40mm x 40mm x 30mm (cup chuck drive)

3mm MDF template – sphere size ie: 75mm

Tailstock centre

Tailstock centre with cup chuck provision (to finish turning the sphere)



Bowl Gouge – medium or large

Spindle Gouge – 13mm or larger

Round Nose Scraper – 12mm – 25mm wide

Skew Chisel – 13mm – 25mm wide

Parting Tool

Vernier Gouge

Super glue, sanding grits, power sanding (drill) with Velcro sanding pad

Pencil & paper



Dremel/ Micro Motor (any of these will suffice) With the provision to hold a

3/32 Bur

Round Bur 1.5mm
